Modern Old Memphis – DT Porter Building 1

December 4th, 2005

I’ve started on the main building in the painting, and I like the color. Not sure if doing the windows first like I did was the best idea. It’s done now, though, and I’d rather not do them again. It worked ok with the other buildings but with this one… it’s giving me fits. This will be a learning experience for future buildings, I think. Put the color of the building down, then get the windows in.

Modern Old Memphis – Yellow Building Part 2

November 20th, 2005

Not a whole lot more work done, but it’s enough to start making the building look more building like. Probably going to move on to other things and finish it up as I do more of the foreground work.

A little more work on the yellow building.

Modern Old Memphis – Yellow Building

November 12th, 2005

The balconies weren’t nearly as hard as I thought. They just worked out pretty easily! Still have more work to do on it, but wanted to share this little bit.

Modern Old Memphis – Foreground Buildings

October 30th, 2005

I finished some good work on the foreground buildings, and am pretty pleased with the results. The yellow building is going to be a bear with the patios and lower parts of the building that aren’t that great in my reference photo. I’ll be looking to see if I can find a little better photo somewhere on the net.

Modern Old Memphis – Background Buildings

September 25th, 2005

I spent some time plugging away at the background buildings and didn’t take pictures inbetween! Oops… I have to get better about that. I just get so involved in painting I forget to take pictures, though… and nighttime photos don’t give me good photos I’ve found.

What’s sort of sad to me is that one of the buildings will likely be mostly covered with a tree. Jon asked why I was putting so much work into it when it was going to be covered, and I told him that I don’t know what’s going to be covered, so to keep it looking good, I had to do it all correctly. It’ll make a difference in the end, and save me time having to go back and correct what’s actually visible and then fixing the trees. Just necessary artist stuff.

Also, a fair amount of the photos from here will be partial painting pictures. I see no need to give two photos, one of the whole painting and one closeup since it’s only going to be the closeup that will be changed. There will still be occasional full painting images, though, to let y’all see the whole picture.

Modern Old Memphis – Building work

August 21st, 2005

Started getting a little color in two other buildings, but just a little. The splotches at the bottom are color testing. That will all be covered up with the street eventually anyway, so it’s not a problem.

Modern Old Memphis – Second Building

August 16th, 2005

Here’s the closeup of the blue building like I promised. I took it at a bit of an angle to get a better picture. I have to find a good way to get good pictures of my paintings. It’s not easy!

Modern Old Memphis – Second Building

August 15th, 2005
I’ve got most of the work on the first building done. Started work on the second building, but before I could do so, I wanted, no, needed, to get the whole scene of buildings sketched. This proved to be a problem because of the perspective! I decided what I needed was a REALLY big adjustable square. I’ve seen little ones for woodworking, and thought I could just make my own. So off to Home Depot I went with Jon to look for two long rulers that we could drill out to make it. While we were looking, I found exactly what I was looking for! It’s a 48 inch long adjustable drywall square, and it’s perfect. If I only ever use it for the project, it will still be worth the price (was was surprisingly cheap), and I can see myself using it many times.

So, with the new tool, I got all the buildings set in and correct, and started putting some color into the second building. Matching color was fun, but I was smart enough to make lots of it once I had the formula right. This will be useful should I have to repaint a part of it when I screw something up. :)

I’ll try to get a closeup picture of the blue building so it can be seen a little better. Look for that in tomorrow’s post!

Modern Old Memphis – First Building 2

August 6th, 2005

I think I’ve got the reflection look on the windows pretty well. I’ll likely futz with it after I get some work on the rest of the painting done.

It’s looking good to me, though, and that’s the important part!

Modern Old Memphis – First Building

July 25th, 2005

Getting some of one of the background building’s color in. The windows are worrying me because of the reflection in them, but I think I’ve got an idea for it.
